City, School District Close All Public Playgrounds Effective April 3
Public reminded to practice social distancing when using green spaces,
basketball courts and tennis courts

KNOXVILLE, IOWA — Effective Friday, April 3, the City of Knoxville and Knoxville Community School District will close all public playgrounds and structures within city limits to help slow the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19).

The city and school district decided to take this action upon reviewing guidance from the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH), the National Recreation and Park Association and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

All park green spaces, basketball courts and tennis courts will remain open to the public. The city and school district encourage residents to enjoy these areas of the parks while following recommended social distancing guidelines.

“We will continue to closely monitor the situation and, if needed, take the appropriate actions to help keep our community safe,” said Brian Hatch, Mayor for the City of Knoxville. “All city and school playground and structure closures will remain in effect until further notice. We will keep our community updated on any changes to these closures on an ongoing basis.”

“We fully understand the inconvenience that social distancing, school closures and playground closures have had on our families and community members,” said Cassi Pearson, KCSD Superintendent. “We also understand and fully support the physical and mental benefits of getting outside to walk, play or simply enjoy the spring weather. We ask for everyone’s understanding and patience as we closely follow best practices on how to best manage the COVID-19 pandemic. Through all our combined efforts, we will continue to keep our community safe.”

To practice social distancing, residents are encouraged to avoid gathering in groups and to remain at least six feet apart from others at all times. For updates on the latest closures and recommendations related to COVID-19, please visit the following web pages:
