Downtown Streetscape Project

[ARCHIVED] Progress Being Made on Downtown Streetscape

main break at Second Street

To date, Hawkeye Paving has removed all asphalt and concrete on Block 1 of the project and also removed approximately 50% of the sidewalks open for pedestrian use. Over 100' of sewer main has been replaced and 230' remain (total of 330') for this section of the project.

Beginning this week, the contractor will begin repairing sewer laterals which extend from the sewer main to the downtown businesses. This work will include removing concrete, attaching the sewer lateral to the building, and filling in the trench with backfill and gravel to open the sidewalk up. The contractor will have to temporarily close the sidewalk to complete the repair and closures will take approx. 1.5 days to complete. Access to businesses on Second Street will still be open, but only from either the north or the south.

Also, on Tuesday, September 3, the contractor struck a water main by accident. The repair was completed immediately and water services continue, but the water shot up to the height of downtown buildings (see picture)!
